Microsoft Software donations for PRC's
Posted: 15 Jan 2009 10:00 AM
Since eKyros requires MS/Word and MS/Excel for downloads, I am trying to get donated Microsoft software via TechSoup.

To qualify our PRC with Microsoft (and other Techsoup software donors) I must classify our PRC at a high level and then at a subclassification.

I have read on the Techsoup site that some other vendors do not provide software for organizations that "promote a single religion".

I have read that donation requests can be held up at great length if the wrong category is chosen .. it cannot be changed... and they list categories that they intend to deny.

Can anyone tell me what is a good category and subcategory that has worked in the past for MS software donations through Techsoup?

For example, I have looked at "Medical and Related Services" / subcategory: Reproductive Services

------------------------
This would be so much simpler if eKyros was compatible with OpenOffice.org. Any prospects for that?

Hi Keithm,

I'm not familiar with "techsoup", but you can download free versions of MS Word and MS Excel readers from Microsoft's website. This will allow you to view & print exported documents from the reports in CenterPiece..similar to how Adobe's PDF reader works. The only caveat it you can't edit the documents. If you want read/write, you will of course have to purchase a licensed copy of both products.

You might also want to check out the MS Office Home and Student 2007. It includes a bundle of Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote for ~149.95.

Just a thought....hope that helps.

Keith,

You are correct that the Techsoup software donors, like Microsoft, will not donate to non-profits like yours since you promote Christianity. When I was a center director, I tried this and was turned down for this exact reason.

You are correct that Openoffice.org 3.0 is available for free download and supports Microsoft Word documents, but we don't support the results you may get. I have used the software and get mixed results when converting from MS Word format and would not really trust this for important information such as yours.

I agree that Brian's suggestion for finding a good deal on MS Office is your best bet.

Bless you,

Tommy

We received techsoup software about a year ago, and I was looking back in my profile to see what category we used (it seemed that none fit us exactly). The category space was empty in my profile, but the subcategory was listed as Organization Sub-Type: Giving information or opinion (see also Advocacy) . Maybe that piece of information would help as you look through the long list.
