first day of your last period
Posted: 09 Nov 2004 03:52 PM
Hi Brian,

I am entering this for Laura Tatum at PPFC.

Laura said that there are many girls who don't know the LMP date and they can't calculate based on the sonogram b/c they haven't done one. Laura is requesting that they be allowed to leave that entry blank.

Thanks,
Carlye Birdwell

That's interesting, because PPFC provided the original requirement for this field. But I have received similar feedback from other centers. We might want to re-think how this field is used.

Currently, it is used to calculate the "estimated" due date. The due date is needed in order to know when to follow-up with the client -- to set the outcome on the pregnancy test. Leaving this field blank isn't good because there is no way to determine when you should follow-up...

Do they have any idea when the due date will be? they can always do a reverse calculation based on estimated due date.

Hi Brian,

Most of our clients can tell us an approximate date of their last period, at least close enough for us to guess. But, we do have some client that have no idea when their last period was or how long they have been pregnant. I have had some that think that they just got pregnant and they are actually 4 or 5 months. I now do sonograms on any client that needs medicaid and doesn't know when her last period was. This would probably cover all of the clients that don't know about their last period.

I would like to be able to leave the LMP field blank or with an unknown and then put in a due date with the sono results. I'm just not sure about liability when we start blindly guessing at due dates.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks,
Laura

Hi Laura,

If we allow this field to be blank, how would you like to track when to set the outcome of the pregnancy? (See the pregnancy test outcome report.) The report allows you to query for positive pregnancy tests with no outcome by due date (year/month). if we have no due date, you won't be able to know who to follow-up with each month to set test outcomes.

i guess we can add a new field called "Test Outcome Follow-up Date" or something which could be used as the "estimated" due date. and then use it to query against to determine when to follow-up with client to set the outcome.

what do you think?

Hi again,

Most of the clients will have a due date from the sono. Can the due date from the sono take the place the place of the LMP due date when we don't have an LMP date? But, the "Test Outcome Follow-up Date" could work.

The only problem that i can think of using the sono due date is the scenario where a client receives a pregnancy test and does not have a sonogram during the same visit. it also might be confusing for the person doing data entry because they would have to lookup the sonogram due date in the sonogram form.

Hi Brian,

I thought that I had responded to this. Maybe I didn't post it.
Anyway, can we have the LMP date and the if LMP isn't know, put unknown and then enter a "Test follow-up date" (or whatever it should be called)? The Test follow-up date would just be a default for when unknown is placed in the LMP space?? It is true that some clients may not come back for their sono.

Thanks,
Laura

OK, i'll remove the requirement on the LMP field. I'll also add a "Test Follow-up Date" under the Office Use Only section on pregnancy test form. In the Pregnancy Outcome Report, i'll add the ability to also search by "test follow-up" date....in case some tests don't have a LMP date, and therefore won't have a due date.

(I should be able to get this in for the release Sunday night.)

thanks for your feedback Laura!

-Brian

Hi Brian,
Has this change been made? I was trying to enter a client file today that didn't know their LMP and I typed in "unknown" and it told me that a date was needed.

Thanks,
Catherine

Hi cmarchionni,

Yes the change has been made. For LMP's of unknown, just leave the field blank. the field only accepts dates, no text.

fyi...be sure to enter a follow-up date (under the Office Use Only section), for tests with no LMP date. (Tests with no LMP date will not have a due date.) For more info about following up on pregnancy tests, see the Pregnancy Test Follow-up report.

let me know if you have any additional questions. thanks!
