New Microsoft Update

| Are there any program setting changes that need to be made due to the new Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 updates that will be made on November 2? Thank you for the help. |

Hi pgm,
We are aware of one minor issue with IE7 and will be posting a fix soon. The issue relates to the "auto-complete" search box that is used on a few forms. When you select an item from the list, the control doesn't release the focus of the mouse and gives the impression that the page has froze up. A small work around is to alt-tab away, then alt-tab back to the form to restore the mouse. Our goal is to post a fix as soon as possible...hopefully within the next couple days. Thanks! |

We posted a small update to CenterPiece this evening. The update addressed a minor compatibility issue with CenterPiece. CenterPiece is now 100% compatible with IE7. Please let me know if you have any questions. |

I had downloaded IE7 on my computer and then found out that our own webmail was not compatible and I neither are some government secure websites. I guess some of them have been slower to get things in line with that. I had to uninstall IE7. That was just a couple weeks ago,--thought i would let you know, just in case any others have problems once they download IE7. |

| Thanks for the info Terri. I personally have been running IE7 for a month now. Other than a few lock ups, it's run great. Hopefully the gov sites you refer to will update their sites soon. IE7 is truely the most secure way to surf the web. In fact, i believe Microsoft is going to start offering it via it's automatic update site. This means any computers that are setup to receive security patches will get the IE7 update too. Just an fyi.... |

MS Windows = High Total Cost Ownership
Since eKyros is dependant upon Internet Explorer
we might possibly be having to pay for windows licences we get, if they're not donated.
Do you think it is still ok to use IE6 from a security standpoint?
I help maintain the computers at our CPC and was contemplating using Ubuntu Christian Edition to run IE6 on Linux instead of buying licenses for windows.

Hello rico,
I don't think IE6 will run on linux unless you are using some sort of windows emulation. We recommend using IE7 but will support IE5.5 and greater. As long as centers are running microsoft update on their windows computers and have a firewall installed, they should be okay. Obviously the latest OS and Browser combination (Windows XP SP2/Vista and IE7) is the safest route to go.
Question for you:
If you go the linux route for your center. What happens when you move on? Who will support your center after that? In my experience, there are tons of windows engineers that are quite cheap and could step in and support your center. Linux engineers charge a lot more for support and there aren't as many available. Is your center taking this into consideration?

I found out that IE6 requires a copy of windows on the computer anyway, so we will have to use Windows. We'll probably end up trying to go with Windows XP sp2 not 3 they don't have one :-)
Updating operating systems can be a chore and regaurding to your question: Who will support your center after I leave?
Good Point. The Linux systems I was thinking of using Ubuntu CE, and PuppyLinux get new operating systems more frequently than windows, PuppyLinux seems like it gets updated once a month. So Linux would be more costly to keep it updated at a business if a person had to update it manually.
I'm trying to stay away from the TCO Linux vs. Windows debate as it is probably too way off topic for this thread. Too much to think about.
On the subject of Windows updates... Automatic updates from a local computer on the network might be something to look into for Windows... getting from 2 to that imaginary 3
