Negative Test Intentions Posted: 14 Sep 2006 12:16 PM |
Does the counselor need to do initial assessments for negative test clients?
Thanks. |

Hi Lynda,
This is up to your center, but my opinion is that it's always good to have the most complete information as possible.
Here's one example of why you might need this data.If you would like to get statistics on how many of your clients initially came into the center abortion minded (regardless of their later test result), then it is important to get this information.
Just some thoughts. Hope this helps!
Thanks,

I've always thought this would be good to track!
So, do we enter Initial Assessment on the Case Form under Pregnancy Status? Anyplace else?
Thanks.

Sarah:
More clarification, please.
If you record intentions for negative test clients, does this include:
1. Entering the last contact Pregnancy Status in the Case form?
2. Entering the estimated due dates for negative test clients?
3. Entering the counselor's after-visit intention assessment? This would mean you would need to ask her if she changed her mind about abortion even though she didn't have a positive test.

Hi Lynda,
Great question! In trying to answer question #1, I had to go back to what CareNet says about a case. Here is their definition: "a case is a situation involving any client who has never been to the center or a return client with a new possible pregnancy related concern (new pregnancy, post abortion, abstinence)."
In addition, a while back we asked Kristin Hansen from CareNet about creating a new case for negative pregnancy tests, here was her answer: "you should create a new case for each negative test if the test if for a new pregnancy related concern and not a re-test of the same possible pregnancy."
Given the above, you would need to update both the intentions before and after on the pregnancy test AND on the case form. This will ensure that your case level statistics are correct and in-synch with your pregnancy test statistics.
As far as question #2 of your previous post, you don't have to enter estimated due dates for negative clients.
For question #3: yes, you are correct, the counselor would have to ask the client if she had changed her mind about abortion even through she didn't have a positive pregnancy test.
I hope this helps clarify. Thanks again for your post and have a great day!!
